What is a VPN?

Virtual Private Networks (VPN)

Virtual private Networks offer cost-saving remote access to a private LAN over the internet or public telephone lines. You can establish secure point to point or rather VPN conections with several journals across public data network paths like the internet  with the help of PPTP (Point-to-Point-Tunneling-Protokoll).

For example by loggin on to a dial-in node (Point of Presence = POP) of an internet provider, you can make use of your company's networks and applications without having to dial into the company network. Encapsulated respectively encoded data packages are being exchanged via this "tunnel", which the PPTP presents within the internet connection to your internet provider.

PPTP connects directly from your computer to the target server by establishing a virtual network for each remote client. A Windows Server-Administration for example is able to monitor and administer such a virtual network in the same manner like every other Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS). You have to first install the PPTP journal in order to establish a secure connection to a server via the internet.

With this kind of connection employees working from a HomeOffice can access the corporate network with a DSL flatrate internet connections.
